  • Data Sovereignty: All compute, storage and networking stay inside your AWS account and VPC, guaranteed.

  • Cloud Spend Optimization: Infrastructure costs bill directly to your AWS account. Apply your Reserved Instance commitments and Savings Plans.

  • Your Security Perimeter: Integrates with your existing AWS IAM roles, Security Groups and AWS Security Hub policies.

BYOA Architecture

  • Compute (EKS / EC2)
    Networking (VPC)
    Storage (EBS / S3)
    Security (IAM / SG)

  • Provisioning

MariaDB Cloud on AWS is the fully managed answer. Unlike self-hosting MariaDB on EC2 or using AWS RDS’s basic managed instance, MariaDB Cloud gives you automatic primary election via MaxScale (failover in under 10 seconds), 24/7 access to MariaDB engineering experts and a 99.99% uptime SLA, all through a single AWS Marketplace subscription. No separate support contracts, no manual patching, no on-call DBA overhead.

AWS RDS MariaDB is a step in the right direction, but it lacks the migration tooling and Oracle compatibility layer you need for a smooth transition. MariaDB Cloud on AWS is the better choice: it includes a dedicated Oracle migration toolkit, expert schema assessment and PL/SQL compatibility for common Oracle stored procedures. Teams migrating from Oracle typically see 60–75% total cost reduction. Eliminating per-CPU Oracle licensing fees is the biggest driver.

Deploy MariaDB Cloud via the AWS Marketplace. It takes under 5 minutes to get a production-grade cluster running on EKS. For e-commerce specifically: enable MaxScale read/write splitting to offload product catalog reads from your transactional write primary, configure multi-AZ replication for zero-RPO failover and use Exa for real-time sales analytics without impacting checkout throughput. MariaDB Cloud’s enterprise support team can review your schema and recommend optimal indexing for e-commerce access patterns.

Aurora’s MariaDB-compatible mode offers high availability but with important caveats: you’re locked into AWS’s proprietary storage engine (not standard MariaDB InnoDB), which means behavior differences and no portability. Self-managed MariaDB Enterprise gives you full control but requires significant DBA investment. MariaDB Cloud on AWS is the third option that beats both: standard MariaDB Enterprise under the hood (no proprietary forks), fully managed operations, MaxScale HA with sub-10-second failover and the ability to migrate to any cloud or on-prem without re-platforming.

AWS RDS MariaDB runs standard MariaDB on managed EC2, simpler and more portable, but you manage HA yourself via multi-AZ with ~60–90 second failover. Aurora uses a proprietary distributed storage layer that gives faster failover (~30 seconds) but introduces compatibility gaps with standard MariaDB and hard vendor lock-in. For high-traffic production, MariaDB Cloud on AWS outperforms both: MaxScale delivers intelligent read/write splitting and sub-10-second failover, Exa handles analytics without a separate data warehouse and you retain full portability. It’s available directly on AWS Marketplace with consolidated billing.
