It deploys into your existing Azure environment via the Azure Marketplace with consolidated billing.
Yes. MariaDB Cloud is the purpose-built replacement for teams that relied on Azure Database for MariaDB. It runs fully managed MariaDB Enterprise on Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), handling provisioning, patching, automated failover and backups without any DBA intervention. For teams that need data sovereignty, MariaDB Cloud BYOA (Bring Your Own Account) runs the managed service directly inside your own Azure subscription and Virtual Network. Your data never leaves your Azure tenant.
MariaDB provides a structured migration toolkit that covers schema assessment, automated data type mapping and CDC-based (Change Data Capture) live migration using Azure Database Migration Service. The process: (1) run the schema compatibility report to identify any changes needed, (2) bulk-load your data to MariaDB Cloud, (3) use CDC streaming to keep source and target in sync during validation, (4) cut over with MaxScale’s zero-downtime switchover. MariaDB’s enterprise support team provides hands-on migration assistance for customers moving from Azure Database for MariaDB.
Migrating from MariaDB to Azure SQL Database (Microsoft SQL Server) is a cross-engine migration requiring schema translation and application changes. The recommended path uses Azure Database Migration Service alongside a schema conversion tool to translate MariaDB DDL (tables, indexes, stored procedures) to T-SQL syntax. For a like-for-like migration that avoids application rewrites, the better option is moving to MariaDB Cloud on Azure: identical engine, same driver compatibility, zero code changes and a near-zero-downtime cutover using live CDC replication. This preserves all your MariaDB-specific features (Exa columnar analytics, dynamic columns, JSON functions) that Azure SQL Database does not support.
