MILPITAS, Calif. AND DUBLIN — August 6, 2025 — MariaDB plc today announced that it has won a 2025 DBTA Readers’ Choice Award for Best Overall Database. The DBTA Readers’ Choice Awards is an annual competition in which the readers of Database Trends and Applications (DBTA) magazine select the winning information management solutions, products and services across more than 30 categories. This is the second time MariaDB has been voted Best Overall Database by DBTA readers.
“Being recognized as the Best Overall Database by DBTA readers is validation that our recent innovation in AI and vector search is delivering significant value to our customers and community,” said Vikas Mathur, chief product officer, MariaDB plc. “Organizations are increasingly wanting to reduce their dependency on legacy databases such as Oracle, SQL Server and MySQL. MariaDB stands out as a popular choice for its enterprise reliability and rapid open source innovation.”
“The amount of data and its complexity have been growing at a rapid clip, and it shows no sign of stopping. To contain this data, making the right choices among the countless options for data management and analytics solutions is a top priority for many organizations,” said Tom Hogan, group publisher, Database Trends and Applications. “To help companies progress along their data-driven journeys, each year, DBTA presents the Readers’ Choice Awards, providing a unique opportunity to recognize companies whose products have been selected by the experts — our readers.”
The 2025 DBTA Readers’ Choice Award win follows another recent win where MariaDB Enterprise Platform was recognized for an AI TechAward in the category of Best in Open Source AI for its innovation in open source embedded vector search technology. MariaDB also recently announced the acquisition of Galera Cluster, further enhancing its high availability and scalability capabilities, and launched MariaDB Enterprise Platform 2025 early this year, the version of MariaDB that first debuted integrated vector search. Benchmarks of MariaDB’s vector search capabilities show that MariaDB outperforms PostgreSQL’s pgvector by 1.5x for queries per second (QPS) and 2x on index creation time.
The MariaDB database has been downloaded over a billion times and is used extensively across both small and large organizations across the globe for endless use cases including banking, flight operations, 5G networks, prescription management and the public sector.
