MariaDB Community Server 11.8 is now generally available (GA) for download. This is the latest long-term maintenance (also known as “LTS”) version available for the community. MariaDB Community Server 11.8 includes all the latest features and capabilities that have been released following the last LTS version that came out about a year ago, MariaDB Community Server. 11.4.
What’s new in MariaDB Community Server 11.8
This version adds many advanced features since the last LTS release (MariaDB Community Server 11.4).
Below are some key highlights:
Integrated Vector Search
MariaDB’s Vector Embedded Search is designed for ease of integration with your existing database workflows. You can create vector embeddings using various techniques and store them directly within your MariaDB tables. Powerful indexing options allow for fast and accurate similarity searches using metrics like cosine similarity. It allows you to perform efficient similarity searches on high-dimensional data, opening up exciting possibilities for applications involving:
- Semantic Search: Find information based on meaning rather than just keywords. Imagine searching for “items for a pool party” and getting results like “sunscreen,” “inflatable sea lion pool float,” “bathing suit,” and “goggles.”
- Recommendation Engines: Build intelligent systems that suggest relevant items to users based on their past behavior or preferences. Think of recommending products similar to what a customer has previously purchased.
- Anomaly Detection: Identify unusual data points by comparing them to their nearest neighbors in a vector space. This can be invaluable for fraud detection or identifying system irregularities.
Enhanced JSON Functionality
Building upon the already robust JSON capabilities in MariaDB Server, this LTS release incorporates enhancements from across various minor releases, such as:
- JSON Path Expressions: Navigate and extract data from complex JSON documents with greater precision and ease. For example, you can now more easily extract specific nested values or filter arrays based on criteria within the JSON structure.
- JSON Schema Validation: Ensure the integrity and consistency of your JSON data by defining and enforcing schemas directly within the database. This helps maintain data quality and simplifies application development.
- Performance Improvements: Benefit from under-the-hood optimizations for common JSON operations, leading to faster query execution and reduced resource consumption.
Temporal Tables for Data History and Auditing
First introduced in MariaDB 10.3 and now available with several enhancements, Temporal Tables automatically manages the history of your data and simplifies the development and maintenance of applications that require data lineage. This is crucial for:
- Auditing: Maintain a complete history of modifications to your data, allowing you to track who changed what and when. This is essential for compliance and security.
- Point-in-Time Recovery: Reconstruct the state of your data at any point in the past, which can be invaluable for recovering from accidental data corruption or user errors.
- Historical Analysis: Analyze trends and patterns in your data over time without the need for complex custom solutions.
Enhanced Enterprise Security
Security is critical, and this release integrates the latest security enhancements across various minor releases, such as:
- Improved Authentication Mechanisms: Stronger and more flexible authentication options to enhance the security of your database access.
- Enhanced Encryption Capabilities: Improvements to data-at-rest and data-in-transit encryption to protect sensitive information.
- Fine-grained Access Control: More granular control over user permissions and privileges to ensure data security and compliance.
